Heartworm
Posted on 2010-03-17 13:04:33
It is that time a year again. The mosquitos are waiting to hatch. Do you have enough heartworm preventative to protect your pet from the dreaded heartworm?
It all starts when the mosquito carrying microscopic heartworm larvae takes a bite, leaving the larvae behind to infect the dog. Over the next several months, the larvae hatch and become worms that migrate to the heart (where they can grow up to a foot in length) and cause severe lung inflammation and heart failure. Symptoms range from coughing, difficulty breathing, energy loss, dizziness and even death.
Come on in and we can do a very simple bloodtest that makes sure your pet is negative for these worms. Hopefully this is so and we can send you home with a flavored pill you give by mouth once a month. Heartgard, Iverhart, Revolution, or Interceptor are the brands we carry.
In the Kansas City area, it is important to give heartworm preventative year-round.
